technical and creactive skills
In our film noir clip the technical and creative part of the clip such as the camera/lighting /green screen was really good for us and was easy for us to do. We used the green screens for the parts where we needed an office, when the doomed hero was about to get caught. Also for the femme fatale was on the phone to talk to the doomed hero was he needed help to escape the place? In other scenes we used places around school that looked appropriate for a 1940’s film. The places we used, that didn’t need to be used by the green room, in one location we used the garden to the schools caretaker because it had more the effect of looking like a ally way where the main character is going to meet someone to do some ‘business”. Another place that we had used was the schools hallway for when the police officer catch’s the main character in the act of the robbery. We had 5 scenes all together, which were in different places. For the lighting for the short clip wasn’t much work because on the outside scenes we mostly used natural light because they were outside, we tried really hard to make all the lighting even for the first few scenes because the weather kept on changing and that was a huge effect when we was recording because if we added the black and white effect it would show the difference. Where as the green room scenes wasn’t that difficult unless we had to stop recoding and do it another day because we had to move the light in the exact place. We tried to make the ‘film noir’ effect by casting a small shadow behind the characters. With our camera we tried to get a variety of different shots but was a difficult task because when we was not in the green room we had to find a suitable shot that didn’t bring in modern day objects. There was a mix of medium and long shots, which are mostly used inside Film Noir movies.
We didn't use much props for the clip we only needed the basics much as wine bottles, for the office, messy paper, telephone, a gun and glass cups. We had used only used this because they were only needed inside the office scenes, since they were not needed inside in the outdoors scenes. We could’ve used them outside to make more effect to the ally. But for the office scene the props really brought it all together and made it look really effective with all the paper everywhere, the wine bottles open and half finished with glass cups and with a telephone that the main character had to use. With the costume we had a bit of a problem because we had to think back and find something similar for the femme fetal to wear that didn’t look to modern but we eventually found something that fitted the scene. Where as the doomed hero was much easier because the school provided the caps the men would wear and we had to find a dark blazer/long jacket for him to wear which made it look really realistic.
The editing with final cut pro was quite confusing at first since the program was new to us but we finally got the hang of it after trying to mess about with it to see what we could do. By using this program we was able to string all our scenes together and make them flow nicely so they would look like a proper Film Noir movie would. We were able to include a still picture of a company that would produce a Film Noir movie. We was able to cut out parts of the recoding that wasn’t so good so we didn’t have to waste the good part of the action. We also added in the text in a blank screen to give suspense and to show that we are going into a scene that is in a different time frame. With the music was a difficult job since we had to find music that fitted in the 1940’s and that fitted into the mood and the action that was happening but we figured out how we could change it a lower the volume when it needed to change and when it need to come back into the parts when there was no one talking. Also we added sound effects to the parts such as when the gun was triggered which made it come to life than just a fake gun that didn’t work. By using this program it was one of the main things to help make the movie and add all the effects that’s was needed for the movie.
The skills that I have mastered while doing this project was that was add music and edited it on where we needed it and how to edit it and change it if we need it lower or slower. I found this as an important skill since music is a key part in movie making. Also I mastered how to add a background to a green room scene, which wasn’t that hard to learn, also how to add a still scene that just needed text. I had got this much down since we had our own jobs to do but I find that if I have mastered this in our next project I would be able to help and see if I could develop more into these areas.
With our title we used the font that looked bold that would be used in the 1940’s era. It was more like block writing but smaller with a style. It was in white since Film Noir movies are mostly Black, White and gray and with a dark background with white writing with a bold font made it really stand out. With it standing out it would make you feel like you should pay attention to what’s going in "Unfinished business". We placed our title in the middle of the screen to make it clear what the title is and what it world is about. If we put the title on one side it wouldn’t look that interesting or professional.
With our Film Noir clip we made out atmosphere in the beginning we tried to make it a normal depressing day for our doomed hero until he is surprised to walk into an old friend (that he falls for) then the atmosphere changes when he sees her it turns into of a shocked and a bit happier than he was in the beginning. The lighting in the beginning was much darker in the beginning that made the scene look more depressing and boring till the doomed hero walks into the femme fatal the lighting changes to show the change of mood and how the doomed hero feels when he sees her. The location that we did was near the school caretakers house was because he had these bushes that looked like a New York ally way. Which made it more effective and interesting.
The doomed hero was the first person to be introduced while the credits were being shown you can see him walking through the alleyway and he starts talking. By doing this it made him look mysterious and want people to more of him to understand his character and why is it based around him. Where as the Femme Fatal was introduced shortly later when the doomed hero was leaving the ally way to go to his flat, where the camera was on the floor moving up slightly to show that she had more power than the doomed hero. The police officer was introduced last because at the end when the tension was building up and when the doomed hero is seen in the act.
For film we made it interesting for the audience by adding a little deal in the beginning which made it a little interesting and that creates suspense on what’s going to happen next and would they get away with it or will something else happen and end in a bad way. The suspense is still carried after the robbery when it is left on a cliffhanger, which would leave the audience on the edge of their seats and would want to know more about the movie.
Our film had a very tensed ending and a cliffhanger. Since the doomed hero was in a problem which he tried to get out of but was left there and runs into even more trouble when the police arrive (What will happen next? no one will know).

The company that we used at the beginning of the film was the warner bros because they did produce Film Noir movies because they were a company during the Noir times. Also that they were one of the oldest company’s that I know that could be also known during those times. As well as it being the following reasons it fitted our movie, which made it really easy for us to choose because it had that old effect which made you, think of old movies back at the Noir times.
Our film is mostly aimed at middle-aged people, male and female, and to those who are huge Film Noir fans or 1940’s fans because this movie is not only for one set of people because it better to get a film that can go to different types of people so it would get more views. |
Overall I think my film Noir opening was really good because we didn’t do as bad as we thought but we made it quite interesting and was not many mistakes through out it. Compared to others, some are better than ours but some are not as good as ours, which made me really happy because we did try hard and had to re-take more than half the movie to try prefect it and also some people had to stay back to edit our film because we had to finish by our dead line. While making this movie I learnt that its not easy to produce a perfect film and that it takes a lot of time and effort and a lot of time to plan if you want a successful film because you cant just make it and rush it or it wont come out as right.
